Rafa Benitez, the Spaniard and former Liverpool manager as
been appointed an interim manager by Chelsea till the end of the season.
Benitez replaces fired ex-manager, Roberto Di Matteo as the
ninth manager under the reign of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea owner.
In a somewhat dramatic turn around by two time UEFA Manager
of the year, Benitez had to cut short an engagement in the Middle east to fly
to London for talks which culminated in he being appointed “interim coach” till
the end of the current season. He had refused to be linked with the Chelsea
post in 2007 when he said it would be disrespectful to his now former
employers, Liverpool Football Club.
The Spaniard has been out of job since being sacked by Inter
Milan in 2010 but he has the pedigree by all standards. “The owner and the Board believe that in
Benitez, we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of
football, who can come in immediately and help deliver our objectives”, the
Chelsea statement read.
