50 killed as herdsmen invade Nasarawa gov’s hometown

GUNshots resonated on Thursday, at Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State’s hometown, Kwandere, as Fulanis invaded the village and killed over 50 people, destroying property worth millions of naira.
An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the incident which occurred around 1.00 p.m. at Kwandere in Lafia North Local Government Area of the state later distrupted the academic activities of the two state-owned institutions- The College of Agriculture and the Polytechnic, Lafia.
The latest hostility was between fulanis and farmers, being a reprisal to the incessant communal crises in the state.
It was further learnt that when the fulanis invaded the community and started shooting sporadically, inhabitants of the area started running helter-skelter to nearby villages and the state-owned institution which was a stone-throw to the troubled community.
It was further gathered that a student of the institution was one of the casulties and that resulted in war better between students and fulanis. The students were said to have barricaded the only main entrance into the state capital for many hours before the police dispersed them.
When also contacted on phone, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Micheal Ada, confirmed the crisis, saying only two people died and no student of the polytechnic was among the casualties.
The PPRO said about six Fulanis were arrested at the point of the crisis and one AK-47 riffle with 16 life ammunition being recovered from them.
