Lagos, others record first rain in 2013

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rain started at about 1:30p.m with a heavy thunderstorm.
NAN reports that the rain which was also experienced in Ikorodu, Jakande Estate, Ijegun, Oke-Afa, Isolo, Fadeyi, Surulere, Ajao Estate, lasted for about one hour.
NAN also reports that residents of Ibafo, Mowe and other satellite towns in Obafemi Owode Local Government area of Ogun, experienced the first rainfall in 2013.
They told NAN that the rain brought a sigh of relief owing to the heat they had been experiencing for some weeks now.
NAN, however, reports that the rain was light and only lasted about 15 minutes in those areas and was preceded by a cloudy weather.
The residents told NAN that they were delighted with the early rainfall, saying that it would reduce the prevailing heat.
“My brother, we thank God for this rain because it will stop the heat for now.
“At least, one will be able to sleep well now and the body rashes the heat has been generating among the children will be over,” Mr Wale Oladipo told NAN.
Also, Mrs Christianah Obioma, said that with the rainfall, people would likely consume less quantity of water now.
“In the last two weeks, I have been consuming about 10 sachets of water amounting to N200.00 each day.
“This has been having effect on my pocket. Thank God for this rain as I would be consuming less now,” she said.
Malam Abubakar Jimoh urged people to pray for more rainfall very soon.
“I say this because if the rain stops falling, the heat it will generate may be more severe for both human beings and animals,” he said.
Mr Cyprian Okoloye, Deputy General Manager, Central Forecast, office of the National Weather Forecasting and Climate Research Centre, Abuja, reacted.
“It is the first rain over the South-West, especially in Lagos.
“It does not mean the raining season has started.
“There was a sudden pull of moisture into the inland area of Lagos, which enhanced the rain, combined with thunderstorm.
“We are in the middle of the dry season, the harmattan, which is till prevailing. It will still come back in the next three to four days.”
Okoloye said that the rain would further enhance the harmattan season which was brought in through the East westerly wind.
According to him, it will aid in bringing down the high temperature.
“Usually, we don’t experience warm condition at this period. But just before we have the rains, it actually shows that there is a lot of movement of moist in the air,” he said.
Okoloye said there was no cause for alarm and urged residents to be cautious with the harmattan period that would recur.
