The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that over 100 suspects have been arrested over the killing of a White Cap Chief of Lagos, Chief Kayode Adeshina.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeshina was assassinated by unknown gunmen on Thursday at 3 a.m. in his residence at Iga Iduganran Street, Isale-Eko, on the Lagos Island.
A reliable source at the police headquarters, Ikeja confirmed the figure to NAN in an interview.
The source added that those arrested included some of the deceased family members and youths in the area.
Chief Adeshina, 73, was rushed to the General Hospital, Lagos after the incident where he was confirmed dead.
Also speaking with NAN, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ms. Ngozi Braide (DSP), confirmed the arrest but failed to give any figure.
“We have made some arrest between Thursday and Friday. Many persons have been arrested for investigation. The suspects will be screened and those that have no question to answer will be released.
“We appeal to members of the public to be patient with the police so that they can do a better job.
“We also appeal to those with useful information to contact the Commissioner of Police and other senior officers. We assured of adequate protection of our informants,’’ Braide said.
The spokesperson said that all the suspects had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the Lagos State CID, Panti, and had taken over the investigation of the case.
On items carted away by the suspected gunmen, Braide said that only the black berry mobile phone of one of the deceased children was reported stolen.
She said that through investigation, the police would be able to ascertain if the killing was an assassination attempt or robbery.
“We recovered three locally made live cartridges at the scene,’’ Braide said.
