Luis Suárez given 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic

Luis Suárez has been handed a 10-game ban for his bite on Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic at Anfield on Sunday, leading to a fierce response from Liverpool who say they "shocked and disappointed" at the punishment.

A three-man independent regulatory commission, impartial to both Liverpool and Chelsea, opted for the lengthy suspension after considering the Football Association's charge of violent conduct against a written submission from the Anfield club on Wednesday morning. An FA statement said: "A three-person independent regulatory commission today upheld the FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.

"The 26-year-old will now miss the remaining four games of this season and the first six domestic matches of the next campaign, potentially ruling the Uruguayan striker out until October, although he has until midday on Friday to appeal the additional suspension.

Suárez received an eight-match ban plus a £40,000 fine for using racially abusive language towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra last season and Wednesday's commission could take that into account if they wished. He was also banned for seven matches by the Dutch FA in November 2010 for sinking his teeth into Otman Bakkal of PSV Eindhoven.

Armless fun? Evra aims jibe at rival Suarez as United celebrate Premier League title

Patrice Evra celebrated Manchester United's 20th top-flight title on Monday night by biting into a fake arm, the day after his nemesis Luis Suarez sank his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic.

Joke: The arm was thrown onto the pitch from the stands at Old Trafford

United had just beaten Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday when Evra brandished a fake arm, that was thrown onto the pitch from the stands, in what appeared to be an attempt to mock Liverpool's striker.

The pair have previous, though. Suarez was handed an eight-match ban after being found guilty of racially abusing the Frenchman during a match at Anfield in October 2011

Luis Suarez: The serious and the less serious

Luis Suarez's bite-attack on Chelsea rival Branislav Ivanovic may have rocked English football but it has also inspired many people to take a more light-hearted view of the scandal online.

Photoshopped images of the Liverpool striker have gone viral, including one showing him as the blood-thirsty Count Dracula and more as killer shark Jaws, gobbling up victims.Others have compared him to a dangerous dog needing a muzzle or someone who is just very hungry.

The Uruguayan was today offered anger management classes by the Professional Footballers' Association, allowing jokers to recreate the poster for Jack Nicholson's hit film, Anger Management.

These bite-inspired images have already become internet hits viewed by thousands around the world. Suarez earned the nickname 'The Cannibal of Ajax' and a seven-match ban in 2010 for drawing blood from the shoulder of PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal while playing in Holland, allowing comparisons to Hannibel Lecter.

Liverpool's Managing Director Ian Ayre has confirmed that the Uruguayan has been fined for his latest misdemeanour  - believed to be between £200,000 to £400,000 – which go to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.
