Nigerian Pilots who died in NAF Alpha jet crash in Niamey buried

The two pilots who died in a Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet that crashed in Niamey, Niger Republic have been laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery on Airport Road in Abuja.

The the ill-fated jet crashed on May 6.The two officers who were buried with full military honours are Sqn.-Ldr Benjamin Ado and Flying Officer Ayuba Layelmenson, who lost their lives while serving with the Africa-led International Support Mission in Mali.

Ado who hailed from Benue, was born on April 22, 1979 in Lagos and was admitted into Regular Course 50 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) on Aug. 17, 1998.He was commissioned into the air force as a pilot officer in September, 2003.

Layelmenson, who hailed from Gombe State, was born on Aug. 17, 1987 in Azare Local Government Area of Gombe State.He was admitted into Regular Course 57 of the NDA on Sept. 26, 2005 and was commissioned Flying Officer on July 14, 2011.

The ceremony was attended by the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Defence, National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, all the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police.

2 Nigerian Air Force pilots die in fighter jet crash

A Nigerian warplane crashed in Niger on Monday, from where it was conducting military operations in neighbouring Mali, and the two pilots were killed, an army source in Niamey said.
The fighter jet was part of Nigeria’s air fleet engaged with an African force battling hardline Islamists in Mali. The Niger military source said it had suffered a “mechanical” problem.
“A Nigerian fighter plane crashed this morning (Monday) in the Dargol zone (west), killing the two pilots,” the officer said.

Nigerian army spokesman Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru, confirmed the jet belonged to his country’s airforce, but gave no further details.
In a statement by Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters issued in Abuja. Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, Director Defence Information, said the aircraft was on a non-combat mission when it crashed.
He said the Alpha jet was one of the four based in Niamey as part of the African-led Support Mission in Mali.
He added that an Investigation had begun “to unravel the circumstances that led to the accident”, adding that details would be made known as soon as the families of the pilots had been informed.
French and Chadian planes and US drones have used the Niamey airport as a base for their operations in Mali.
The 6,000-strong African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA) has taken over the lead from France in supporting Mali’s army in the battle against Al-Qaeda-linked extremists.

228 People Killed And Over 4000 Houses Burnt In Baga – Senator Lawan

A Borno state Senator, Maina Lawan, on Saturday revealed that the actual death toll in the clash between soldiers and Boko Haram is 228, while over 4,000 houses were also burnt down.

Baga is the birth place of Senator Lawan who represents Baga and other towns in Borno north in the Nigerian senate.The villagers had told the state governor and journalists, two days after the incident, that they buried 185 people after the clash, a figure disputed by the Nigerian army.Mr. Lawan, a former governor of Borno state, expressed fears of an epidemic if the federal government does not immediately deploy more rescue and humanitarian aid workers to assist the displaced people.

According to Senator Lawan, at one of the three graveyards called Makabartar Waya, 130 graves of victims were counted.In another graveyard called Makabartar Arewa, 60 graves were counted, then in Budumari graveyard another 30 graves of victims were counted, while inside the town, the aid agencies said they buried eight corpses which could not be evacuated to the graveyards.

There have been conflicting death tolls from the April 19 operation carried out by joint forces from Nigeria, Chad and Niger against Boko Haram insurgents in the remote town of Baga.The Red Cross is investigating a report by locals that 187 people died, including many civilians, but defense spokesman Chris Olukolade said only 37 were killed.

Jonathan Doles Out N5.7 Billion To Victims Of 2011 Post-Election Violence


President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the release of a total sum of N5,747,694,780.00 to nine states of the federation for direct disbursement to those who suffered losses of properties, means of livelihood and places of worship in the post-election violence of 2011.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati.
It will be recalled that following the post-election violence and civil disturbances in some states after the April 2011 elections President Jonathan set up a Panel of Enquiry headed by Sheik Ahmed Lemu to among other things, identify the spread and extent of losses suffered across the country.
The statement said “following the submission of the Lemu Panel’s report and its adoption by the Federal Executive Council, the Federal Ministry of Lands and Housing was mandated to assess the reported losses and damage to properties in all affected states.
“Based on the Ministry’s report, President Jonathan has approved the release of funds to nine of the 14 affected states as follows:
1. Bauchi – N1,574,879,000.00
2. Sokoto – N55,888,506.00
3. Zamfara – N93,253,485.00
4. Niger – N433,375,875.00
5. Jigawa – N208,667,634.00
6. Katsina – N1,973,209,440.00
7. Kano – N944,827,000.00
8. Adamawa – N420,089,840.00
9. Akwa Ibom – N43,504,000.00
Total – N5,747,694,780.00
