A number of sports reporters revealed last month how the Gunners were prepared to smash through all their financial boundaries to land Rooney this summer.

Arsenal hope a package of around £170,000-per-week and a multi-million pound signing on fee - plus the security of a five year contract - could persuade Rooney to take a pay cut from his current £250,000-per-week deal at Old Trafford, that has two years left to run.

Everton's Marouane Fellaini and Bayern Munich's Luis Gustavo have both been monitored by Arsenal's scouting network.

A major shadow has been cast over Wayne Rooney's Manchester United future after he was left out of the squad entirely on Sir Alex Ferguson's Old Trafford goodbye.

The 27-year-old striker has been in and out of the squad in recent weeks but didn't even make the substitutes bench for the match against Swansea that marks Ferguson's last home game in charge of United after a 27-year reign.

Chelsea are leading the chase for the England striker with French giants Paris Saint-Germain also interested.

His recent fallings out with Sir Alex Ferguson have been well documented, with Rooney twice speaking informally about the possibility of an Old Trafford exit.

Despite ongoing speculation, Rooney, posting on his Twitter account ahead of the match, was looking forward to the goodbye party.

'Looking forward to today's game. Excited to lift the trophy and receive my 5th league medal,' he tweeted earlier today.

Wayne Rooney has removed the term "Manchester United player" from his Twitter page and replaced it with "NikeUK athlete" following his demand to Alex Ferguson a fortnight ago to leave the club this summer.

While United are adamant the striker is not for sale, according to a well placed source Rooney is valued at £40m, so if an offer was made this may at least be explored. United are interested in bringing back Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid, so the transfer of Rooney would help finance a deal.

Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea are potential suitors for the 27-year-old who has had an uneven season for United.

While it is not known why Rooney removed the description from his Twitter feed, the timing of it further heightens the sense of his disgruntlement with life at Old Trafford.

Ferguson told Rooney he could not leave and that remains United's stance. Rooney has declined to comment on his position.

He sits 11th on the Sunday Times World Sport Rich List, which is headed by Tiger Woods, worth £570m.Beckham's joint wealth with wife Victoria is rated at £200m.There are two other footballers on the world top 20, Barcelona's Lionel Messi, worth £125m, and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, worth £120m.The Rich List is based on identifiable wealth, including land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies.
