Kebede, Jeptoo claim victory in London Marathon as millions turn out to cheer runners on glorious day in capital

Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede stormed to glory in the London Marathon, but the abiding memory of a memorable Sunday in the capital will be of thousands of runners and millions of spectators in glorious spring sunshine - just six days after a horrendous tragedy scarred the Boston Marathon.

The London Marathon has long been one of the wonders of British sport. This was a particularly special episode.

Clear winner: Priscah Jeptoo crossed the finish line in a time of 2:20.14, some way ahead of fellow Kenyan Edna Kiplagat

A period of silence was observed by thousands competing in the race, and spectators that lined the route.

Kebede's win was his second in London, following victory in the 2010 race. Kenyan Priscah Jeptoo won the elite women's race, while there was early drama when the favourite Tiki Gelena collided with a wheelchair athlete and fell off the pace.

North Korea: Organises Marathon for a change

Having threatened to bomb the United States and warned foreigners to leave South Korea due to an impending thermonuclear war, North Korea returned to domestic matters today by holding its annual marathon in Pyongyang.

The North’s state news agency said a big contingent of foreign runners were expected from countries including Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Ethiopia as well as 600 North Koreans at today's race.

The marathon celebrates tomorrow's 101st anniversary of the birthday of the country’s founder Kim Il Sung, grandfather of the current leader Kim Jong Un.
