Luis Suárez given 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic

Luis Suárez has been handed a 10-game ban for his bite on Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic at Anfield on Sunday, leading to a fierce response from Liverpool who say they "shocked and disappointed" at the punishment.

A three-man independent regulatory commission, impartial to both Liverpool and Chelsea, opted for the lengthy suspension after considering the Football Association's charge of violent conduct against a written submission from the Anfield club on Wednesday morning.An FA statement said: "A three-person independent regulatory commission today upheld the FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.

"The 26-year-old will now miss the remaining four games of this season and the first six domestic matches of the next campaign, potentially ruling the Uruguayan striker out until October, although he has until midday on Friday to appeal the additional suspension.

Suárez received an eight-match ban plus a £40,000 fine for using racially abusive language towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra last season and Wednesday's commission could take that into account if they wished. He was also banned for seven matches by the Dutch FA in November 2010 for sinking his teeth into Otman Bakkal of PSV Eindhoven.

United had just beaten Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday when Evra brandished a fake arm, that was thrown onto the pitch from the stands, in what appeared to be an attempt to mock Liverpool's striker.

Downing Street has called on the Football Association to make an example of Luis Suarez after he was charged with violent conduct for biting Branislav Ivanovic and Liverpool declared their leading striker would not be sold as a result of his latest indiscretion.

The FA cleared the way for Suárez to receive a substantial suspension after confirming the referee Kevin Friend missed Sunday's shocking incident at Anfield and the ruling body said an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct would be "clearly insufficient". Support for an increased punishment arrived from an unlikely source when a spokesman for David Cameron entered the debate over Suárez's conduct.

"It is rightly a matter for the football authorities to consider," said the prime minister's spokesman. "As part of their consideration, I think it would be very understandable if they took into account the fact that high-profile players are often role models."

Contrary to claims from Suárez, Ivanovic has not accepted an apology for having his arm bitten during the 2-2 draw at Anfield. The striker's sponsor, Adidas, has taken the unusual step of criticising its own client, while Liverpool fined the Uruguay international an undisclosed sum on Monday morning, which Suárez asked to be donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group. The Professional Footballers' Association has also offered anger management counselling. Suárez's nomination for the PFA player of the year award will not be withdrawn, however.

The FA is to appoint a three-man independent commission to consider Suárez's violent conduct charge on Wednesday . The panel, comprising a chairman, a former footballer and an FA council member, all of whom are independent of the two clubs involved, will have the power to impose an extended suspension on the 26-year-old. Suárez received an eight-match ban plus a £40,000 fine for using racially abusive language towards Patrice Evra last season and the commission can take his past conduct into account when deciding its verdict.

The pupil sank his teeth into his classmate after copying the shamed Liverpool footballer who bit another player on Sunday.

Suarez, 26, who earns £100,000 a week, is facing a long ban after biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

But despite the global revulsion caused by the incident, Liverpool FC has refused to sack their £23million player – who has now been offered ‘anger management’ by the players’ union.

Last night mother Sharon Ellis said the attack on her son Ryan, 11, was a direct result of the example Suarez had set.

She said: ‘Suarez’s actions on the football field have led to my son being bitten.

 The boys were at the school’s breakfast club and there had been some altercation because someone had stood on someone’s foot. The other boy turned round to my son and said, “I’m going to do a Luis Suarez, I’m going to bite you”.

‘And then he went ahead and bit his upper right arm. He then went around bragging to the other children that he had “done a Suarez”.’

Miss Ellis, 45, from Connah’s Quay, North Wales, said Ryan –  a Liverpool fan – was left with a bruised upper arm. ‘He was a bit shaken. The bite went through two layers of clothing and left a mark,’ she said.

He, more than anyone, has been instrumental in the title race and when he shimmers with this kind of brilliance he is probably entitled to feel aggrieved that the Professional Footballers' Association sent out its player-of-the-year voting slips during the one point of the season when he has endured a lapse of form.

Van Persie might not win the individual honours but he has certainly had the greatest impact and his first-half hat-trick, taking him to 24 league goals and leapfrogging Luis Suárez as the leading scorer in the division, was the work of an expert in his field. He was at the hub of everything, the arrowhead of attack, bristling with menace, making it feel like a trick of the imagination that it was only a few weeks ago he was snatching at chances and following up every miss with a look of self-revulsion. Van Persie has put together some portfolio in United's colours but he took his performance up another level here and the volley for his second goal, from a ball dropping over his left shoulder, was probably his outstanding work to date
