Rivers State: Court Orders Police To Vacate Obio/Akpor LG Secretariat

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has this morning ordered the Nigeria police to vacate the Obior/Akpor Local government council secretariat in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.

The Police had, last week, sealed off the council secretariat citing plans by some hoodlums to storm the place following the suspension of the council chairman, Prince Timothy Nsirim, the vice chairman and 17councilors by the Rivers state house of assembly.

The Caretaker Committee of the council went to the court to seek for an order that will allow them access to the secretariat. The Speaker of the Rivers Assembly had accused the Federal Government of a ploy to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers, starting from the Obior/Akpor council.

The Assembly, loyal to the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, suspended the council chairman and appointed a caretaker committee; while the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, loyal to the presidency, condemned the suspension and instead suspended the state lawmakers from the party.

Nigeria: CPC and ANPP agree to merger into APC

Two of Nigeria’s opposition parties, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) agreed Saturday to merge into an electoral behemoth, the All Progressives Congress(APC), which they vowed would defeat President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 polls.
The two parties approved the move in separate conventions aired live on television.
A third, the biggest opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria, okayed the mega party project last month.
“This merger will make us too strong for the PDP to resist,” said CPC leader Mohammadu Buhari during a convention attended by 3,000 delegates in Abuja.

“We must explore all oportunities to save our country,” said Buhari, a retired general and former military ruler who has contested all presidential elections in recent years.

Rivers PDP Gives Amaechi 48hours To Explain His Plane Controversy, Suspends 27 Assembly Members

The crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new twist as the party on Monday, suspended 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The party’s leadership also announced that it has given the state Governor; Rotimi Amaechi, 48 hours to “explain to Rivers people why the jet bought with the state government money is bearing a bank’s name on the documents.”
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Sunday  grounded the plane of River State governor for the expiration of its operating license while the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) claimed that the plane belongs to the Bank of Salt Lake City,USA and was brought into the country on chatter by Carverton Helicopters.
The new chairman of the party in the state, Felix Obuah told journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital, that the suspension of the lawmakers was over their refusal to obey an order by the party to reinstate the suspended Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area.
He noted that the suspension of the lawmakers, who are members of the party, is part of resolutions reached at the end of an emergency meeting of the party on Monday.
I have been following this "Amaechi's" case with close interest- cannot wait to see more of the drama.

APC woos aggrieved PDP governors

The All Progressives Congress has expressed its preparedness to receive   the Peoples Democratic Party governors sympathetic to the embattled Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, into its fold following the governors' threats to leave the PDP
The spokesmen for three of the four parties in the merger, said that they were optimistic that the governors and other PDP members would defect to APC as the crisis in the ruling party deepens.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Lai Mohammed, said it was only natural for politicians leaving the PDP to join the APC.He, however, clarified that the merger neither initiated nor fuelled the crisis in the ruling party. He said, "The four parties that formed APC-ACN, Congress for Progressive Change, All Nigeria Peoples Party, and All Progressives Grand Alliance - are not the architect of PDP's problems. In fact, the crisis PDP is facing today predates the coming together of these four parties. But we will be the greatest beneficiaries of the disintegration of PDP.
"On our own, we have not set out to destabilise the PDP, what is happening now was bound to happen and our merger coming at this time is providing an alternative for disgruntled governors, who are unhappy with the way they have been treated in PDP."Mohammed said though none of the governors had officially begun discussion with APC, they would be welcomed if they wanted to join the merger."To the best of my knowledge, I'm not aware of any of them officially discussing with APC, but what I know is that some of them have openly declared that the coming of our merger is timely, because their scattered umbrella can no longer hold them. So, we have become the alternative for these governors," he said.
Also, the National Publicity Secretary, of the CPC, Rotimi Fashakin, said the doors of APC were open to aggrieved PDP members. He said, "Not just the governors, all those who have suffered oppression and the travesty of justice that is common in the PDP are welcome to join APC. It's a political party, if they show interest, they will be welcomed."Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of the ANPP, Emma Eneukwu, said the APC would woo the PDP governors, in order to swell its ranks. "Politics is all about people and getting a state governor over is not a small thing. Even though I'm not aware of any ongoing discussions with the governors, I believe there could be some underground moves, but not to my knowledge yet. It is possible," he said.
Last week, it was reported that the PDP governors sympathetic to Amaechi were threatening to leave the PDP.The governors reportedly resent the strong-arm tactics employed by President Goodluck and his men in their bid to take over the party machinery.Defending the formation of the PDP Governors' Forum, the Political Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, had said the forum under the leadership of Amaechi was being run like a trade union. The Chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum, Godswill Akpabio, had vowed that "Judases" in the party would be probed.

PDP at it again!

I am sure we are all familiar with the hoodwink that the PDP led government has used on this nation in the last 14 years or so. This past week witnessed the formation of PDP's Governors' forum which is different from the already existing Governor's forum in that the latter comprises of only governors elected on PDP's platform.
These guys are always taking us for a ride and we just sit and watch. There are loads of problems facing the nation and all we see is political power tussle.
For how long?
