A seven-year-old girl who became Beijing’s first human case of the new strain of bird flu has been discharged from hospital today.

A daughter of poultry traders, she was the first confirmed case of H7N9 virus in the Chinese capital, but has made a full recovery, state authorities said.

The new strain of avian flu has claimed 16 lives since the outbreak two weeks ago, with the 78th human case of H7N9 virus confirmed in China today.

H7N9 Bird Flu Death Toll Rises to 8

Another person has died in China of the new bird flu, H7N9,  bringing the death toll to eight, according to China's Xinhua Agency. Twenty others have been infected, all of them in eastern China.

The latest victim was an 83-year-old from Jiangsu who was admitted to a hospital with a fever March 20, according to Reuters, which attributed the information to Xinhua.

Close contacts of the H7N9 patients have been monitored, according to the World Health Organization’s latest update.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is already working on a vaccine, using the virus’s genetic code  rather than the virus itself, a first for the agency, according to Nancy Cox, head of the CDC’s influenza division.

Although H7N9 is more easily transmittable from birds to humans than H1N1, Cox said she expects to see limited human-to-human transmission.

Since H7N9 is not as deadly to birds as it is to humans, it will be harder to track because there won’t be large bird kill-offs, Cox said.

WHO Talks With China on Sending Bird Flu Team

The World Health Organization is talking with the Chinese government about sending international experts to China to help investigate a new bird flu strain that has sickened at least 24 people, killing seven of them.

A 64-year-old retired man in Shanghai became the latest victim of the H7N9 bird flu virus that had previously not been known to infect humans, the city government said Monday.The Shanghai government said the man died Sunday night, a week after first experiencing chills. He sought medical treatment last Wednesday for pneumonia-like conditions. By Sunday morning, his condition worsened, he was out of breath and was admitted to a ward for in-patient treatment. He died hours later.

Aside from the latest fatality in Shanghai, China reported two more cases of human infection of the H7N9 bird flu virus on Monday, raising the total number of cases to 24 — all in the eastern part of the country. Most of the patients have become severely ill, and seven of them have died, however milder infections may be going undetected.

Bird Flu Deaths In China Rise To Six

The death toll from a new strain of bird flu found in Shanghai, China has risen to six this week as the Chinese government staged a cull of thousands of birds in a thriving poultry market to prevent a potential spread of the disease.

Some 20,000 birds have been killed at the popular Huhaui bird market in the city after pigeons at smaller nearby markets were found to be infected with the disease.

Six people have now died of the new H7N9 strain of the disease from a total of 14 cases recorded since March.

Scientist are concerned that the disease , which shows no symptoms in birds might mutate and start infecting humans

Shanghai are also preventing any live animal imports into the city, which has a population of more than 23million people, and is also temporarily closing down other poultry markets.
