The scene of accident |
No fewer than seven students of Itori Comprehensive High School, Itori, were killed on Wednesday in a motor accident that occurred at Ewekoro in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun state, western Nigeria.
The Itori Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Fatai Bakare, confirmed that the seven students were killed at about 5 p.m by an articulated vehicle registered as Lagos XZ 628 AKD. The vehicle, carrying granite swerved off its lane and rammed on the students while they were returning from school.
The victims, five boys and two girls, were submerged by the granites when the vehicle somersaulted, Bakare said.
He described the accident as unfortunate, saying that the students were “innocent passersby”.
Bakare advised motorists to be cautious at all times to guard against avoidable accidents.
Eye-witnesses said that some irate students immediately embarked on a spontaneous protest, leading to vandalism of about 50 vehicles and disruption of traffic for hours.
Some of the students told NAN that they resorted to violence, due to “the nonchalant attitude of the Council Chairman, Mr Dele Soluade, and security agencies to rescue the victims”.
Armoured Personnel Carrier belonging to the Ogun State Police Command later arrived the accident scene to restore order and to evacuate the victims. (NAN)
