Jaji bombing: SSS parades 2 suspects

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the bombing of St. Andrew Protestant Military Church in Jaji, Kaduna State.
The church, located in the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, was attacked by suicide bombers on Nov. 27, 2012.
Marilyn Ogar, DSS Deputy Director of Public Relations, paraded the suspects at a news conference in Abuja.
Ogar said that a thorough investigation carried out by the service in collaboration with the military led to the arrest of some suspected masterminds of the attack, including the duo.
According to her, the suspects will be handed over to the military, while investigation was ongoing to establish the involvement of the others.
She added that one of the suspects had confessed that he was initiated into the Boko Haram sect by a slain leader of the sect, who trained him in use of fire arms as well as the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).
“That he has participated actively in several attacks in Kaduna, including the attacks on St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Badarawa, and St. Andrews Church AFCSC, Jaji.
“That the slain leader sent one of the suicide bombers to Damaturu, to retrieve some military uniforms and weapons from the Boko Haram cell.
“That one Lawal volunteered to carry out the Jaji suicide attack personally since no suitable person could be sourced for the assignment due to time constraint,’’ he said.
The suspect added that he accompanied the two suicide bombers up to the gate and bade them farewell.
Ogar said that the suspect confessed that one Tasiu and Lawal, both dead, carried out Jaji attack.
She also said that the second suspect, a yam seller, who hails from Jalingo in Taraba, confessed to have been indoctrinated into the ideology of the sect in 2012.
The spokesperson said that the suspect confessed to have been relocated to Kaduna by Lawal and was given two-bed room flat in Rafin Guza area which served as sect’s operational base.
“That the Toyota Matrix, one of the vehicles used in the Jaji attack was prepared by Mohammed (first suspect) and Lawal in his residence.
“That he served as a motivational preacher and father figure for members of the sect as well as conduct surveillance on selected targets using the cover of being a yam hawker,’’ she said.
One of the suspects told newsmen that he hail from Ilubo village, Osun state and a JSS111 school drop-out.
He said he was initially averse to the activities of the sect, which culminated in the death of innocent people, but all that changed when he became a member.
Asked how much he was paid to participate in the Jaji bombing, he said he got no pay, adding that an occasional N5,000 feeding allowance was made available them.
