A logistics company that routes mail between countries within specified time frame on Monday in Abidjan said request for delivery of endangered animals in Africa was on the rise.
Sumesh Rahavendra, DHL’s Marking Director for Sub-Saharan African said this in a statement made available to newsmen.Rahavendra said that the company’s experience in the past twenty years revealed that requests for delivery of live animals, especially prepared foods and live-saving medicines were on the increase.
He said that in 2012, three endangered Black Rhinos were moved from the UK to the Kilimanjaro national park in Tanzania.“It took a ten-hour journey including a refueling stop in Italy, we provided special accommodations for the animals and the transport team included two rhino keepers,” he said.
The DHL boss also said that the company handled a request for prepared five-course dinner for eight for a function in Zimbabwe.
“A particular unusual personal request came from Nigeria, a client paid to move a birthday cake from Lagos to Abuja, the airfare for the cake was three times higher than the price of the cake.“But the client put a significant premium on the need to have the cake delivered at a particular period of the day,’’ he said.
Rahavendra said that the company increasingly saw need for cross-border and continental transportation of raretissue samples, organs and urgent medical needs equipment.“We have dedicated people who manage these types of shipments, and ensure that delivery is done as required,’’ he said.On the global scene, he said DHL recently delivered two Sumatran tigers to U.S. and Australia respectively.
